Candelis Case Study

Candelis Upgrades High-Volume Clinic’s Workflow and Improves their Efficiency and Productivity

The Situation

Seale Harris Clinic, a high-volume facility in Birmingham, Alabama, was founded in 1922 as a small sole-practice clinic for Dr. Seale Harris, born March 13, 1870. The practice grew rapidly expanding services to 50,000 patient visits annually, When the clinic’s former PACS was nearly over-extended, they decided to move away from the incumbent vendor, and chose Candelis for their replacement system.

The Opportunity

After evaluating various medical informatics options, the clinic chose the Candelis solution. Some advantages included Candelis’ technologically advanced turnkey solution, competitive cost, and the inclusion of a Modality Work List (MWL). Candelis also provided 9 physicians with access to the server’s general viewers.

Furthermore, Candelis seamlessly provided data migration of all studies from their previous PACS to the new one.

Finally, Candelis systems are compatible with all vendors, support viewing of all modalities’ DICOM images, and can be customized to best suit the clinic’s needs.

The Solution

After a six-month process from decision to move ahead, the site was up and running including modality procurement, installation, staffing, integration, and testing among several different vendors and systems,

As Seale Harris did not previously have a MWL option in their previous workflow, Candelis ensured that the intricate configuration included the assurance that inbound orders from the site’s Allscripts EHR were received, processed, and populated to the modality’s MWL.

The HL7 integration with AllScripts and inclusion of the MWL helps Seale Harris become a more productive and efficient clinic. Once a study is on the reading workstation, it will not need to download again. This eliminates the need to re-download and cache studies to the workstation.

Seale Harris also chose to utilize Candelis’ ASTRA cloud storage services for backup of all their patient images and reports. ASTRA cloud is HIPAA-compliant system for storage and remote image viewing. Moreover, ASTRA’s affordable and efficient disaster recovery services provide turnkey protection of Seale Harris’ entire system.

The Results

With the system firmly in place, the opportunity to provide more convenient care for patients is now available at Seale Harris Clinic.

"The Candelis ImageGrid system has made our clinic even more efficient by seamlessly integrating our EMR, PACS, and all of our modalities. The transition was very easy and no-fuss, and Candelis is now a very integral part of our successful practice," said Lorie Box, Seale Harris manager.

"We’re also confident that our data is encrypted and fully protected because of our ASTRA backup," Box added.
